Art work, 1803-1867.

Collection consists of measured drawings, ink sketches, pencil drawings, and watercolors. Largely architectural drawings attributed to John Izard Middleton. Six sets of measured drawings are signed J.I.M. and are dated 1811-1813. Three other sets have similar formats (some with watermarks dated 1808-1809). The 25 drawings included in these sets are designs for five country houses, including one villa, and for one greenhouse. All are in the Adamesque style and none is known to have been executed. An unrelated design by Thomas Walker was made to add Adamesque wings to an existing country house. The design is dated 1809, and the original house was constructed in c. 1790. A set of four drawings include one marked "Plan for altering & adding to Middleton Place. Front view. W.M. 1864." The initials are those of the owner of the plantation at the time, William Middleton, and the drawings relate to others prepared in 1863 by a builder Fred J. Smith. The main house would have been more than doubled in size, and it and the wings would have been renovated to resemble 17th century Dutch architecture. A miscellaneous group includes designs for a stable and for a gate, two maps drawn by Henry Middleton, Jr., in 1867, and a watercolored perspective view of of a street in Cambridge, England (watermarked 1803).
